Victory Honda wins Women’s Sr. B national title
Last July the Victory Honda Women’s Senior B team had only seven skaters and a goalie.
And anybody familiar with elite adult hockey – particularly Women’s elite adult hockey – knows that at that point in the summer, it is difficult to find quality players who are not already committed to a team for the upcoming season.
Well, not only did Victory Honda find enough players to ice a full team, but they were good enough to help VH win the 2018 USA Hockey Women’s Senior B National Championship.
Victory Honda (29-7-2) defeated BLT (Team Cleveland) 5-2 in the national championship game on April 8 in Bedford, MA.
“I think the girls should be proud of the way they came together,” coach Brad Johnson said. “They deserved it.”
Nichole Laflamme had a goal and two assists in the championship game. Stacey Hochkins, Karsyn Baker, Emily Nelson and Prenella Semma also scored. Goaltender Brittany Zeches made 28 saves.
Victory Honda, which went 6-0 in the national tournament and outscored its opponents 29-5, beat the Carolina Lady Hurricanes 2-1 in the semifinal.
It is the first national title for the Victory Honda Women’s Senior B team, which reached the national championship game in 2013 and lost in the national semifinal the following three seasons.
After the semifinal loss last season, Johnson did not like the team’s chemistry and thought changes should be made in leadership. That change led to a significant number of players leaving the team to join another team in July. This resulted in Victory Honda having only eight players committed to the team in mid-summer.
“Instead of finding ourselves settling for a team-rebuild season,” Johnson said, “we posted a team-season record of 29-7-2, won the TCS Winter Classic Tournament in Buffalo, won the Senior B MAHA State Championship and won the Senior B USA Hockey National Championship.
“I couldn’t be more proud than I am of this group of dedicated players and coaches.”
Hochkins was Victory Honda’s leading scorer in the national tournament with seven goals and four assists for 11 points.
Members of the Victor Honda Women’s Senior B team are Kaitlyn Allard, Brittany Zeches, Lauren Lobert, Kris Vaclavek, Heather Mannix, Kelly Harris, Karsyn Baker, Prenella Semma, Alexis Glenn, Alisha Day, Emily Nelson, Stacey Hochkins, Nicole Emblad, Becky Sonn and Nichole Laflamme.
