Blashill says first meeting with his new boss goes well
Wings coach Jeff Blashill, left, has worked with one future Hall-of-Fame GM (Ken Holland), and now gets to work with another – Steve Yzerman, right.
Jeff Blashill, who is in the Slovakia coaching Team USA at the World Championship, recently had his first meeting with his new general manager, Steve Yzerman.
“My first four years, I had an opportunity to work with no doubt a future Hall-of-Fame general manager in Ken Holland,” Blashill told mlive.com. “Learned from him, had the opportunity to have great interactions with him.
“Now I get another opportunity to work with a Hall-of-Famer in Steve Yzerman, a guy who’s done a great job in Tampa, and it’s a great opportunity to work with and learn from another great mind. We got to make sure we continue to grow our young players to push them toward being elite-level type players.”
Blashill has had input on his new boss, including from his good friend, Jon Cooper, coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who knows what it’s like to coach under Yzerman.
“I have some insight on Steve’s managerial style, what he’s like as a person and what’s important to him,” Blashill said. “I’ve had Chris Chelios on my staff, who knows Steve real well, and Kris Draper is in our organization, so I’ve had opportunities to talk to people and have a decent feel for what Steve is about.
“I think anytime you enter into a relationship like this, there’s a process of getting to know each other and work together and finding each other’s strengths, and I look forward to that process. Our first meeting was very good.”
