3 area hockey powers headed to 60th annual Quebec Tournament
Compuware, HoneyBaked and Little Caesars will represent Metro Detroit at the 60th annual Quebec International Pee Wee Tournament in Quebec City, Quebec, Feb. 13-24.
HoneyBaked (35-9-4) is the 13th-ranked Tier I Pee Wee Major team in the United States, according to www.myhockeyrankings.com, and is coached by Ryan Barnes.
Compuware is 16-18-7 and coached by Tim Osburn, while Little Caesars, who will be playing as the Detroit Red Wings and wearing Red Wings jerseys, is 18-25-6 and ranked No. 23 nationally.
An all-time high of 19 countries will participate in this year’s tournament as teams from Lithuania and Romania will be on the ice in Quebec City for the first time. Also, teams from Russia return to the tournament after a six-year absence.
Tournament alumni include Hall of Fame all-time greats Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull, Patrick Roy, Mike Modano and Brendan Shanahan; current superstars Connor McDavid, Steven Stamkos and Auston Matthews, and current Detroit Red Wings Dylan Larkin, Danny DeKeyser and Anthony Mantha.
The 1977 tournament was particularly full of future Hall of Famers with Lemieux, Yzerman, Hull, Roy and Pat LaFontaine all participating.
Another feature that makes the tournament special is that participating players stay with local Quebec City-area families, giving them an unforgettable first-hand experience.
