High school teams go head to head at MIHL Schowcase
The Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League’s Annual Prep Showcase was Thursday through Saturday night at Trenton’s Kennedy Arena.
Below are some of the event’s most interesting and notable games.
OLSM stuns Traverse Central Central in third
Orchard Lake St. Mary’s scored all five of its goals in the third period to rally from a three-goal deficit and defeat Traverse City Central 5-3 on Friday.
The Eaglets, No. 6 in Division 1, trailed 3-0 after two periods.
Chris Dundas’ power-play goal with 5:22 left was the winner. Matt Kuphal had two goals and two assists. Dundas added an assist, and Blake Hazelton made 21 saves for OLSM.
Charlie Douglass had two goals for Traverse City Central, which is No. 6 in Division 2.
Hartland 4, Cranbrook 3: Kieran Carlyle’s penalty-shot goal with no time left on Friday was the winner for the two-time defending state champion Eagles, who are ranked fourth in Division 2. Jack Wineman’s goals 4:34 apart (6:22 and 1:48 left) tied it 3-3 for the Cranes, No. 5 in Division 3.
Novi Catholic Central 2, Notre Dame Academy (WI) 1: Dylan Dooley scored both goals for the Shamrocks, who are rated first in Division, on Friday. On his first, in the third period, he tied the game at 1-1 on a power play, then won it on an end-of-the game penalty. Louis Finnegan made 15 saves for the CC. Charlie Wied had Notre Dame Academy’s goal.
Calumet 2, Trenton 1: Scott Loukous scored twice in the third period to rally the Copper Kings, No. 1 in Division 3, to the come-from-behind win on Saturday. Alex Studebaker made 22 saves and Cam Kauppinen had two assists. Bradley Nemeth scored for the Division 2, No. 1 Trojans. Joey Cormier stopped 32 shots for the Showcase hosts.
U-D Jesuit 3, Salem 2 (OT): Connor McDowell scored the winner eight minutes into overtime on a penalty shot on Saturday. The Cubs, fourth in Division 3, led 2-0 after two periods but Devan Grayshaw and Ethan Granowicz (2:24) left scored in the third period to tie it for Salem. Joey Morency made 20 saves and Max Marquette had two assists for U-D Jesuit and Andre Genereux stopped 23 shots for Division 1, No. 4 Salem.
Plymouth 6, Lake Orion 4: Plymouth, 10th in Division 2 scored three goals in the third period for the comeback win on Thursday. Ian Smith scored the tying (:19 into the third) and winning (7:14 left) goals and added two assists. Brendan Finn scored twice for Division 2, No. 7 Lake Orion.
Catholic Central 5, Hartland 0: Goaltender Adam Blust only had to make 11 saves as the defending Division 1 state champion Shamrocks stifled 11 the Eagles on Saturday. Brendan Miles had a goal and an assist for Catholic Central and Kyle Gaffney had three assists. Bret Beale, Nick Borchardt, Dylan Dooley and Jack Estfan also scored for CC.
Livonia Stevenson 6, Saginaw Heritage 2: Brenden Heard scored twice and the Spartans, No. 1 in Division 2, held Heritage to 13 shots on goal on Saturday. Saginaw Heritage is second in Division 1. Nick Justice and Jaron Anderson added a goal and two assists each for Livonia Stevenson. Michael Pochinni and Dominic Glenn also scored for the Spartans and Brendan Stroble made 11 saves. Brady Rappuhn scored both Heritage goals.
