Lake Superior State tops Tech, wins its first GLI title
Lake Superior State celebrates its first-ever Great Lakes Invitational championship at Little Caesars Arena Monday.
Diego Cuglietta scored twice and Max Humitz had a goal and two assists to lead Lake Superior State to a 6-3 win over Michigan Tech and the school’s first-ever Great Lakes Invitational championship on Monday at Little Caesars Arena.
The Lakers (11-6-1) beat Michigan State 4-3 in overtime in a semifinal on Sunday as Cuglietta, named the tournament MVP, got the winner 3:05 into the extra period.
Alex Smith had a goal and an assist for Michigan Tech (11-8-1) on Monday, and Seamus Donohue had two assists. The Huskies defeated Michigan 3-2 in a shootout in Sunday’s other semifinal.
The Wolverines (6-7-6) skated to a 2-2 tie with the Spartans (6-9-3) in the third-place game earlier on Monday.
This was the 54th edition of the GLI, College Hockey’s oldest tournament, which has previously been played at Olympia Stadium, Joe Louis Arena and Comerica Park.
