It’s official: Blashill will return as Red Wings coach
Jeff Blashill will be back behind the Red Wings bench next season.
General Manager Ken Holland announced on Tuesday, April 10, after the Wings had cleaned out their lockers at Little Caesars Arena, that Blashill will fulfill the final season of his four-year contract.
“I thought the team played hard right up to the final game,” said Holland, who himself recently signed a two-year contract extension. “I’m hoping that (the team will improve) with two, three, four players from our system making the team next year.
“He did a god job with the young players this year … They improved as players,”
The Wings (30-39-13 in 2017-18) missed the playoffs for the second consecutive season after Blashill, in his first year, led the team to the postseason – the franchise’s 25th straight trip to the playoffs.
“Certainly still glad to be the coach of the Detroit Red Wings, a job I love,” Blashill said. “ … Excited about the opportunity to continue my job.”
It was reported late in the season, according to an un-named source in the organization, that both Holland and Blashill would be back in 2018-19.
