State High School Tournament to be spread over three weeks
The Michigan High School Athletic Association wants hockey players to have more time to recover between state playoff games, and their families and friends to have more time to make travel plans, if necessary.
So, during its annual Winter Meeting on March 22 in Grand Rapids, the MHSAA’s Representative Council voted to expand the time frame of the state hockey playoffs from two weeks to three.
Beginning with the 1919-20 state tournament, there will be 20 days from its start to finish, instead of 13. The maximum amount of games a team can play from the start of regionals through the final games will remain at six.
The dates for the start of the regular season and the state championship games (second Saturday in March) will remain the same, as will the total number of regular-season games allowed. However, the MHSAA Tournament will begin on the third Monday before the Finals instead of two weeks before.
