Draper promotion, other changes official, according to Wings website
Wings GM Steve Yzerman, left, has official promoted Kris Draper, to director of amateur scouting.
Kris Draper’s promotion to Red Wings director of amateur scouting is official, according to the team’s website.
It was widely believed that Draper, who was the assistant to former general manager Ken Holland, would replace Tyler Wright in that position after Wright’s contract was not renewed three weeks after Steve Yzerman became Detroit’s general manager on April 19.
The website also listed Mike Barwis as the director of sports science and human performance, a move that Hockey Weekly reported last week.
The Wings also hired four amateur chief scouts, according to the website: Former Red Wings defenseman Jesse Wallin, who has been an amateur scout for the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues for the past six seasons; Ann Arbor native Ryan Rezmierski, who was scout for the past eight years with the Nashville Predators and is a former director of player personnel with the National Team Development Program, and Bryce Thomas and Kevin Gibson.
Thomas Carlsson was added to the European scouting staff.
In addition, four more new scouts were listed – Bryce Roma, Rob Rassey and pro scouts Kyle MacKinnon and Chris Yzerman, GM Steve Yzerman’s brother. Livonia native Phil Osaer was named head of goaltending scouting and development. He was formerly a goaltending scout for the Tampa Bay Lightning, where Yzerman was GM.
The Red Wings have also made two coaching changes.
Former team video coach Adam Nightingale (Cheboygan) was promoted to assistant coach, and former Carolina Hurricanes video coach LJ Scarpace (Dearborn/University of Michigan) was named Detroit’s new video coach.
The titles of three front-office staff members have also been adjusted: Jiri Fischer is listed as the associate director of player personnel, Shawn Horcoff as director of player development/assistant director of player personnel and Dan Cleary as assistant director of player development.
